1and1 just made my shitlist
by Bruce Ure at 10:09 02/11/06 (Blogs::Bruce)
For the second time in 3 months the idiots at OneAndOne, my rackspace providers, have reset the DNS on my ure.org.uk domain to its default (wrong) setting, and then denied all knowledge of it, insisting that someone must have logged in to my account and so I ought to change my password with all speed.
Yeah, cos if you were going to hack what amounts to someone unknown person's blog server you'd definitely go in, change a single DNS setting, and then log off. What a laugh that would be.

The first time, when I asked them for logs showing access to my account on their DNS system they suddenly changed their minds and begrudgingly accepted responsibility, and I got an apology and an assurance that they were going to put measures in place to ensure it didn't happen again, etc, etc. Yeah, right.

Currently I await a reply to my email beginning "NO!" and drawing attention to the email exchange of 3 months ago. We shall see what transpires.

Time to find a new host, I think.

Gosh, what a surprise. They are in the wrong again.

Dear Bruce Ure, (Customer ID: xxxxxxx)

Thank you for contacting us.

I have received this case from our administrators regarding your SSL
certificate for ure.org.uk.

You had cancelled the SSL certificate on 2006-09-21 08:50 PM and set the
termination date for 2006-10-26 11:00 PM. When this was done, your
domain name was by default re-pointed back to the IP address of the
server. We have discussed this with our backend developers who should
now have fixed any further problems of this nature. When an SSL is
cancelled, it should now retain all DNS information. I do apologize for
the inconvenience. You should be able to change and DNS entries for
your domain at this time. If you have a problem doing this please let
me know and I will look into it a.s.a.p. Thanks for your patience and
have a nice day.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

Looks like they migrate you to a separate IP of your own when you convert to having an SSL cert (necessary because you can't use VHosts with SSL), and then revert you back to a shared IP when you cancel your SSL cert.

Perfectly reasonable behaviour *if* you tell the customer, and first line support know all about it so they don't just give you a knee-jerk response when you call.

Things like this is why I picked Merula for my ADSL. RJP is very good at dealing with issues promptly. He bent over backward to help move my domain ownership from a firm in the USA to Merula.

Funnily enough I'm negotiating with him at the moment. The only reason for going elsewhere in the first place was that he was way more expensive, but he's been able to match my best alternative offers recently. My broadband got upped to 8 megs and dropped by a tenner a month when I mailed to say I was going to have to leave. I didn't know whether to be miffed that they'd been happy to take all that extra cash for god knows how long, or just pleased that I was saving a tenner a month and able to download porn 8 times quicker.

I wasn't sure if they did dedicated servers but it seems they do. Although probably resold from someone else. Hopefully not oneandone.

Definitely talk to him. He's very up-front about his service since he's really just a small firm so he knows his customers well.

He actually set up a fax-by-email service, not especially for me though, but I use it to fax Mum and she can fax me back all without me needing a real fax machine.
