Extending the Stonehenge Avenue alignment
by Simon at 12:31 29/08/06 (Blogs::Simon)
If you project the Avenue alignment beyond Sidbury Hill, it passes directly through the intersection of a number of footpaths and an earthwork with Chute Causeway at a place called Scot's Poor on the western side of Haydown Hill.

This looked interesting enough to warrant a visit to the location, especially since James had mentioned that there were good views over the countryside to be had from this part of the world.

I certainly wasn't prepared for the wonderful appropriateness of what I found there though...

In a bizarre coincidence (ha!) I found that along the edge of the byway that follows the Avenue alignment for the last half mile up to the intersection at Scot's Poor someone has cultivated a wide strip of sunflowers at the edge of a field of wheat.

Ta for this - I'll try to get out there for a look in the next few days if I can.

It's a bit off to the east of the exact alignment, which I'm now starting to think doesn't extend much beyond Scot's Poor.

Went up for a recce the other evening, it is an outstanding view and I plan to go back with Kris when the weather's better (too murky for a clear view to the horizon) to see if I can spot Sidbury.

Faccombe's a bit of an excellent little village - might have to go sample the beer in the Jack Russell pub :-)

That sounds like a good excuse for a beer - I'll see what Kris's up to and get back to you.

Kris may be tied up on Saturday, depending on timing, so when do you fancy heading to the Jack Russell so I can buy you a birthday drink?

Meme collision alert! Simon - 11:21 20/07/07
The universe is having a good go at poking me in the head this morning.

I googled up the Jack Russell and Faccombe, and came across this article about Tim Landon - the owner of Faccombe, who died last Friday aged 64.

Up until a week ago the rest of the article about Landon's time in Oman, and his being involved in the coup that made Qaboos bin Sa'id the Sultan over his father back in 1970 would have passed me by practically unnoticed.

However, I just happen to be reading "Atlantis of the Sands - the search for the lost city of Ubar" by Ranulph Fiennes at the moment, which goes into some detail about exactly those events.

Bizarre.

He *could* tell you, but then he'd have to kill you.

Probably via issuing you a lethal voltage over TCP/IP, electrocution of undesirables for the purpose of: 1 off.

'nuff said.

Just so long as the pub sign doesn't have "The Slaughtered Lamb" crossed out and "The Jack Russell" written over it...
