I think I've cracked it, although I won't be sure until I get home.

When the VPN client installs on XP , it creates a new LAN connection in Network Connections with an adapter name of 'Cisco VPN Adapter'

By default in XP this is set to 'disabled'

I suspect that enabling it, opening the ports on the f/w will make it work....

watch this space for evening disappointment ;-p
