True, but a read lock is still a lock and will generally (I say 'generally' because I'm not entirely sure what OSX does here) inhibit a delete request on the same file.
(Amit Singh, who works for Google, wrote a very good book on Mac OSX Internals which may explain some of this although I've not read it.)
