You're thinking of Santorini/Thera.

Far too late to be Atlantis, at c.1600BCE, though the explosion was almost certainly what the 'pillar of fire' and 'column of smoke' were that Moses used when leading the Israelites out of Egypt.

<guinness>"This is not the Atlantis you are looking for"</guinness>

Descendants of Legendary Atlantis: Are Northern Europeans more pure descendants of the Atlanteans than their Mediterranean counterparts?

... only the redheads and ginger folk.

Yup, 1600BCE was when the Minoan civilization went phut as a result of the eruption of Thera.

Here's a map (black dashes and label are my additions)

I've often thought that the bathymetry of this area suggests a much larger caldera, but it'd be truly enormous.

LIDAR does apparently work underwater, but really you want sediment-penetrating sensing technologies.
