Sometimes
by David Crowson at 04:44 11/12/07 (Blogs::Dave)
it pays to step outside....

Couldn't sleep, so I put the kettle on and whilst it was brewing i stepped outside as its a clear and very bright night, was looking at one of planets i believe (very orange) and boom, a really good meteorite zapped past. Fantastic....not bad for a 15 second look. Went back outside once the tea was done and 3 more in 10 mins...

Gotta love those....

-- simon , I'm guessing it's part of the Sigma Hydrids ?

Sounds like you were looking at Mars, which is in Gemini right now.

The meteors could've been Hydrids, might also have been early Geminids. The Geminids are a reliable strong shower, though I confess I don't usually make any serious attempt at observing them 'cos it's too damn cold to be outside for 5 hours in December :-)

Some folks on the Comet-ML list reported seeing what they thought was a new outburst from Comet Holmes last night, turns out to have been a fuel dump from an Atlas Centaur rocket that was launched recently.

The universe likes to makes astronomers suffer for their art, that's why :-)
