Re: Look out David Crowson - 12:08 13/01/05
except Sony have just told me that in order to them to fix my laptop (which is under warranty), it's going to cost me 586 ukp :(

That's the last Sony I'll ever buy then.
Harumph.

Um, does not compute.

What reason are they giving?

Re: Look out David Crowson - 12:54 13/01/05
the T+C's(of the warranty) state that LCD's do not fall under the warranty.

I've had 2 previous VAIO's that have suffered much more abuse and thy're still working, this one has only lasted 6 months....

Er, the *screen* is not covered by the *warranty*??

That's insane. They might as well say "this will probably break".

IIWY I would pursue that with your local Office of Fair Trading. They might well tell you to get bent but IIRC you have a period during which the manufacturer, or possibly supplier, is legally obliged to repair or replace.

It's not so much "failed" as "smashed" isn't it?

Household insurance mebbe?

So, are you saying 6 months of having it on the back of the bike may have been detrimental to it's performance ;-p

Re: Look out Simon - 11:38 14/01/05
Not necessarily - I thought it'd been involved in some kind of accident, rather than just wear and tear.

Perhaps I'm misremembering.

Re: Look out David Crowson - 13:50 14/01/05
I accidently opened the lid with my thumb on the screen , thus creating a thumbsize crack in the internal layer holding in the liquid...

Ah - bugger!

Managed to drag my Powerbook off the desk by its power lead yesterday, but touchwood it seems to have survived.

that's the sort of ruggedness I *expect* from my equipment.

Re: Look out Bruce Ure - 15:00 14/01/05
Perhaps you should consider somthing like a Panasonic Toughbook.

I'm not surprised they won't cover a thumb-crack. I thought it had failed in normal use.

Bummer though :-(

Are you going to get it repaired, or write it off?

You could consider household contents insurance (you do have contents insurance...?) I used mine once to get a red-wined laptop replaced.

And finally, have you thought about asking a non-Sony laptop specialist to look at it? Probably fix it for half the price.
