I've swapped out my video recorder for one of these.

Trouble is it's gonna take me ages to convert all those tapes.....

I'm surprised you didn't go for a hard-disc based solution... dual digital TV tuners, DVD writer, stacks of disc space, ShowShifter with one of the intelligence addons: roll-your-own TiVo, in short. This is what I shall be attempting sooner or later.
