For all you eBay addicts out there

Here's a useful service
Stick your search terms in and it generates a custom RSS feed of items on eBay.

Neat, and useful.

Re: For all you eBay addicts out there Bruce Ure - 11:00 20/08/04
Thought I'd try this as an intro to RSS. Anyone here using Sage, the RSS addon for Firefox? I get "XML Parse Error" when I drag the rss url into the feed url box and tell it to go for it.

Also when I drag the novacaster 'xml' link in to it.

I can believe it about the ebay one but I don't buy Novacaster's being nadgered. Any ideas?

Does the error message give any more details?

I'll search out Sage and give it a go here.

Unfortunately not :-/

Sage is here.
Re: For all you eBay addicts out there Simon - 11:36 20/08/04
OK, check the URL you've got entered in Sage's bookmarks for the Novacaster feed.

It should have the rss=1 parameter somewhere in it. Post the URL you've actually got and I'll see what's going on.

I've now got Sage installed, and had the same problem with the 'Latest Contributions' RSS feed on this site. Adding &rss=1 to the end of the URL makes it work, I just need to work out what was giving you the wrong URL in the first place.

A thought occurs - are you dragging the favicon from the address bar in your browser (when viewing the RSS feed having clicked on the XML icon) into the Sage entry box that has a big F at the start of it?

If so, then you're dragging into the *wrong* thing - that's a search facility, not a feed addition tool.

Instead, try viewing the Latest Contributions page and clicking on Sage's magnifying glass ("Discover Feeds").

Am I on the right track?

No wasn't doing that but must have been something similar. However, dragging the XML button into the toolbar I've designated as my RSS feed toolbar seems to work.

What do you think of this as an RSS reader? I've no frame of reference.

If you can reproduce the problem, I'd appreciate a follow up but don't sweat it if it's a hassle.

I think it's pretty good as a feedreader, but I'll have to live with it for a while before I decide whether it's better that NetNewsWire or not.

However, I'm less impressed with Feedster's automatic feed discovery thing - so I've sent them a quick email asking how come they can't find the RSS feed in the homepage of this site, given it's got a LINK REL tag pointing right at it.

Ok, what i did was drag the favicon of the "latest contributions" page from the address bar to the bookmarks menu, hovered, then dropped it onto the "Sage RSS" bookmarks folder I created in me bookmarks folder earlier. It then appears in the Sage sidebar, and when you click on it you get the XML error.

Unsurprising really, since it's not XML.

I hadn't made that mental leap of realising you had to go to the XML page first, or bookmark the XML link itself. (I was /sure/ I tried that first, but obviously not.)

Duh.

And I can't actually find a "discover feeds" / magnifying glass button.

Re: For all you eBay addicts out there Simon - 14:53 20/08/04
That'll be it - you fed the URL of the HTML version to Sage by mistake.

I've attached a screenshot of what Sage looks like here - magnifying glass should be pretty obvious I hope.

Hmm, it looks like this here (only MS Photo Destroyer has given it a parchment texture because it's incapable of mapping 'grey' to a solid colour in a 256-colour palette. I despair, I really do).

Anyway. I want *your* computer <flounce>.

(PS no attchment capability for me here...?)

Purely as an aside, I prefer the RSS Reader sidebar for Firefox. Find it here.

They look practically the same here, what do you prefer about it?

It's sloppy. :) Although Sage is technically correct in failing to parse bad XML, there are a bunch of sloppy RSS feeds out there, and I'd rather be able to view them than just getting a parse error. Oh, and OPML import works too, unlike in Sage.

To be fair to Sage in this particular case, Bruce *was* feeding it pure HTML tag soup :-)

Hadn't tried the OPML import yet though.... hmmm, it seems to work fine here, with a NNW-exported opml file.

You got the latest version (1.2.1)?

I've added you to the 'May Attach Files' group in my blog - 'tis a precious gift, to be sure.
