Sounds like you did see it - you'd need binoculars to pick out much of a tail (though some people say they've seen it with the naked eye), but your description is spot on.

Roughly how far to the left of the Sun was it (in terms of bodily appendage held out at arm's length) - fist, palm, span, wider than that?
