First application for a passport, as of October this year, will require the applicant to attend an interview as well, where they'll probably be compelled to provide fingerprints, DNA and iris and facial scans. Passport renewals will require full biometrics later on.

That's why I renewed my passport earlier this year.

The UK ID card debate is dead in the dust for now though.
