Orbital mechanics is a very weird science, and there are some surprising arrangements that give stable orbits over long periods.

Somewhere I've got a copy of Newton's Aquarium - a Mac OS 9 program that's great fun for plonking masses in a G field, giving them initial velocities and watching how things turn out.
