Pyramids on Mauritius Simon - 10:11 08/04/09

Locally, as Stéphane Mussard experienced, the people claim these pyramids are merely stone piles, thrown together in efforts to clear the fields for growing sugar cane.

Oh, yeah, the farmers round our way always arrange their surplus stones like that too, they've nothing better to do.

Remember that the local farmers are probably a bit concerned that if the pyramids become some kind of protected park area then they'll lose access to those fields for crops - so it's kinda understandable.

We have the same sort of thing here on a different scale - the MoD would much rather archaeologists didn't keep finding spectacular things on the Plain.

"Hey, there's ancient field system with a possible undisturbed settlement at the top of the combe."

[FX: lots of loud noises]

"Field system? What field system? Nah, it's just an impact area and those are tank tracks"
