LaCie drive takes up smoking
by Bruce Ure at 23:34 26/12/08 (Blogs::Bruce)
Yes my LaCie 500-gig external USB 'Porsche-designed' hard drive has started emitting smoke.
Right in the middle of a backup (of it, not to it).

Smoke, proper smoke, coming out. All hot, like, and smokey. Ouch!

Merry Christmas.

:( bummer, I had one of those too, it's also in the bin.

I'd stick to the alu enclosed freecom jobbies, they seem to last forever and are fairly robust....

I recently got two Seagate 'XTreme' 1.5 TB drives as well, eSATA, USB & Firewire 400 all in one case. Fab, I thought, I can use them at full speed on the Mac Pro, and firewire or USB from the MacBook. Then within a fortnight they'd both started making the same ominous clicking noise and farting I/O errors at the console.

So that's XTreme as in "XTremely irritating", then.

And back they go.
