Time of third contact, using the Open2.net online AU calculator facility, gave me a value for the Earth-Sun distance of 149.16 million km - not too bad!

Excellent pics, bit worried about that crease running across the sun though ;-p

Cheers Simon,

I thought i would have missed this, great pics.

Might sound stupid but it makes me realise how big the sun is : )

Bigger even that that Simon - 11:15 08/06/04
Venus is about 68 million miles from the Sun, a little over two thirds of the distance between the Sun and Earth, so the size of the silhouette in relation to the Sun disk is somewhat exaggerated.

But it does put it into some kind of perspective, especially when you see images of sunspots that are larger than Earth (quite common)

Nice one Simon. Oh how I wish I had a telescope like yours to complement my Canon 10D DSLR... ;-)

It's the ultimate non-portable scope Simon - 11:19 08/06/04
... as it pointed out to me this morning when I accidentally put it down on my foot, having staggered my way from the shed with it.

Mind you, I'm quite pleased I managed to put it down within a quarter of a degree of correct N-S alignment!

[grin] although the same could also be said of my camera bag!

Ah, that'll be your magnetic head then :)

Magnetic head Simon - 14:31 08/06/04
Indeed - but I have to correct for the magnetic pole deviation from true N by looking along only one side of my nose.

[tangent]Dunno what the BBC are thinking, but one of their news reports talks about the 'so-called' transit of Venus...

Makes me think they think it wasn't *really* a transit of Venus.

Odd.

I can't rid myself of the image of a large, pasty Fag-ash Lil type character leaning against her customised Ford van with the blacked out windows, inbetween customers, pulling on a rollup.
