I recommend Fritz 10 from chessbase its great for novices and experts as with friend mode it plays better as you do.

To play online www.chessclub.com or the free www.fics.something (free internet chessclub)

There are lots of free software the excellent crafty engine can be used with win board but i've only used it for analysis i dont know if it would play like a human not a grandmaster.
