Comet McNaught now visible in broad daylight.
by Simon at 22:11 13/01/07 (Blogs::Simon)
Comet 2006 P1 McNaught is now definitely visible in broad daylight.

See http://www.spaceweather.com/ for more information, and a photo from Switzerland taken just a few hours ago.

The weather for the south of the UK tomorrow is clear and sunny, so there's a good chance you'll be able to see it for yourself.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Just block the sun's glare with anything to hand (eg stand in the shadow of a buiding) and look about a clenched fist's at arm's length distance to the left of it.

It's all lies!

Or, possibly there's just too much glare or pollution or haze or something, because try as I might on several occasions I've not seen anything today a fist's width to the left of the sun except for a uniform bluey-whiteness :-(

Ditto - I've been trying all day with no success.

Too much moisture in the air here - bright white glare in the sky probably overwhelmed it.

It's entirely possible - depends a lot on the local sky conditions.

If it was like this:

comet -> >>>* o <- sun

then probably.

Sounds like you did see it - you'd need binoculars to pick out much of a tail (though some people say they've seen it with the naked eye), but your description is spot on.

Roughly how far to the left of the Sun was it (in terms of bodily appendage held out at arm's length) - fist, palm, span, wider than that?

Actually, going back and look at your times again, between 4.30 and 5.30 would probably have been too late for the comet - sorry :(

At 4.30 it was only half a degree above the horizon (ie the width of the moon) so unless it was exceptionally clear and you had a high vantage point it's more likely to be Venus, which would have been a good span and a half left and up from the Sun and well clear of the horizon.
