World Cup Fever
by David Crowson at 07:35 12/06/06 (Blogs::Dave)
Well, I was in Marienplatz (Munich central) friday night after the German game , and it was heaving , 40,000 mad happy germans in a party mood.

Quite an experience.

This morning, I've been allocated a conditional ticket, and I'm off on Weds to see the Tunisia vs. Saudi Arabia match....should be no problem getting to the bar :)

Great stuff.

I'm not a footie fan (no shit) but in the same way I can't stand Motorhead's music but would quite like to go to one of their gigs, I'd quite like to see a world cup match.

I drew Costa Rica, Serbia & Montenegro, and Australia in a sweepstake at work. Ah well :-/

Re: World Cup Fever David Crowson - 10:33 12/06/06
me, I hate football with a passion (something to do with being an ex county and inter-county champion and england player in my chosen sport but not getting rich and famous for it:), I'm just in it for the atmos and to tick off 'been to a WC match'on my list of things to do before I die. Same as you.

Still, one can't help getting a little excited (and nationalistic) when everyone else around you is....

Roll on Octoberfest :)

It is, after 3 weeks of non-stop rain and snow and hail, it got sunny on Thursday and has been glorious weather since...shame I have to work really :)

Still Thurs is bank holiday here, so some relaxing in a beer garden is called for...

I've long been a fan of the World Cup. Its always fun to watch the chaos of teams made up of stars who don't play together most of the time. 64 games, and every one of them is the most important game ever somewhere in the world.

Did you see Japan vs. Australia? Oh boy, what a game! Australia is another country which like the USA doesn't value 'soccer' highly. Until now. Another football mad nation was just born.

Since I'm working from home, the time difference means matches are 9am - 5pm, and we've got every game live on high definition, I've been watching it all. Both England and Germany played crap games, but they're so full of talent they'll qualify to the next round fine.

Wasn't it great. I thought "well, I'll just go and catch Australia's death throes..." only to see them score three goals, each more jaw-dropping than the last*.

We have big plasmas (though not HD; the UK's only just waking up to that) and TPTB have thoughtfully provided beer and pizza (2 quid) for most matches that start at 5pm our time. They've given the entire workforce permission to stop work ten minutes early on Thursday so we can all get seated in the cafeteria for the 5pm kickoff.

I hate to admit it, but I'm finding myself ineluctably drawn in. It happened for the first time in 2002, but I can feel it stronger this time.

* Except the first. That would be impossible.

I don't do football much, but I try to follow Holland in the world cup. There is one goal - the only one - that sticks in my mind, scored by Bergkamp, that I consider the best I've ever seen.

If you've ever seen it, you'll probably know the one I mean. It is worth watching more just against the chance I might see its equal one day.

I don't know - it tells me "you either have javascript turned off or an old version of Macromedia's Flash Player", neither of which is true.

In the fast changing world of web browsers, that's virtually an antique. Depending on what your Linux is, you might be able to get away with 'yum update mozilla'.
