Dark skies
by Simon at 13:58 10/08/05 (Blogs::Simon)
For the first time since ages, I'm living in a place that has better than average dark skies.
UK light pollution from space, red dot marks Figheldean, Wiltshire

It's a real treat to be able to see the Milky Way again.

Labelled closeup

On the image above, the semicircle of dots of light pollution just south and east of us are:

1) Salisbury
2) Amesbury
3) Tidworth
4) Andover
5) Winchester

To the west and south west is the (almost) utter darkness of Salisbury Plain - woohoo! :-)

So I should start looking for a house in Eire next? :)

I'm intrigued why the coastal areas seem to show a consistently bluer light than the yellow of the inland urban areas.
