As Ian Dury observed 'there ain't half been some clever bastards'. In this instance the original engineer and the guy who's figured it out again.

This is absolutely astounding - a fabulous piece of work. I heard about the antikythera mechanism years ago but I didn't think there was enough of it left to figure out what it did.

As you point out there must have been other examples - probably all melted down at some point to fashion some sort of weapon.
